In counseling men with prostatism, the inclusion of the saw palmetto option would now appear to be warranted for those with mild to moderately symptomatic BPH. Inclusion of this option within the medical mainstream would help to avoid the problem of inappropriate self-treatment, which is an adverse side effect of the current boom in alternative medicine.
