The eve of the FDA hearing for Uprima
(TAP Pharmaceuticals)---the second oral agent for male erectile dysfunction---scheduled
for 4/10/2000, finds the following usage data for Viagra:

- Viagra (sildenafil) was approved by the FDA
on March 27, 1998.
- 280,000 U.S. physicians have since prescribed it
for more than 6.1 million men.
- 18 million prescriptions have been written.
- 140 million tablets have been dispensed.
- 70% of all prescriptions are now for refills.
- 93% of the population recognizes the name
(compared to 96% brand recognition for 'Coke.')
- The overall clinical trials experience to date totals
more than 11,000 patient years of exposure.
- The concomitant use of organic
nitrates remains the major contra-indication.
