In these and the following charts, clinical results are shown, with the saw palmetto patients in red and the placebo patients in gray. Regarding symptom score and urinary flow rate, we found a slight, but not statistically significant advantage for the extract group. A mild to moderate placebo effect was seen during the lead-in period. When treatment was unblinded to the patients and the men given the option of continuing in a long-term open-label extension, desire to continue was 95%, not only in the placebo men, who then wanted to try the real thing, but also in the saw palmetto group, who were told they had been taking the extract all along, and who wanted to continue, indicating great appeal of this type of treatment.
