In a 49 y.o. man with symptoms of 'male climacteric,' and increased gonadotropins, Heller & Myers administered testosterone propionate(red asterisks at top), causing the elevated gonadotropin levels to decrease (curve in middle). Sexual potency and climacteric symptoms (lower shaded areas) improved with testosterone administration. Administration of the sesame oil vehicle alone (area between asterisks) had no effect. The authors concluded that this therapeutic test confirms that "...symptoms and loss of potentia in the group with elevated gonadotropins were due to testicular failure."
